Description

The Philadelphia Mint set a record for dime production in 1920 that would not be exceeded until nearly 20 years later. As it turned out, this quantity of dimes was excessive, and a redundancy developed that would slow the minting of this denomination until well into 1923. With such a large number coined, it’s not surprising that this issue is very common across all grades through MS 65. While the majority lack Full Bands, there are so many Mint State coins from which to choose that FB-certified examples are not rare. With the onset of the 1920s, the Mint faced a problem it had not anticipated. Numeral 2, being much wider than the previously used 1, pushed the final numeral of the date so close to the border that it is often weakly struck on this and all subsequent dates through the end of the Mercury series.
